Austroderia fulvida
Austroderia fulvida, commonly known as toetoe (pronounced "toy-toy"), is a graceful New Zealand native grass known for its arching green foliage and tall, golden-bronze flower plumes that rise above the foliage from late Summer into Autumn. The feathery flower heads catch the light beautifully and provide movement and texture in the landscape.
Perfect for native gardens, coastal plantings, and naturalistic landscapes, Austroderia fulvida thrives in full sun with well-drained soil and tolerates dry, windy, and exposed conditions. It requires minimal maintenance once established. Space 1–1.5m apart to allow for its broad, fountain-like form.
Matures to approximately 1.5–2m tall in flower and 1.2m wide, forming a dense, ornamental clump with year-round structure and seasonal height.
Trimming: Cut back old flower stems and dead foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Use gloves, as the leaf edges can be sharp.
Deadheading: Not required, but spent flower plumes can be removed for a tidier look or to reduce self-seeding.
Fertilising: Generally not needed in fertile soils, but a light application of balanced fertiliser in spring can encourage lush growth, particularly in poor soils.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in prolonged dry periods. Once established, Austroderia is highly drought-tolerant. Ensure soil remains free-draining.
Pest Control: Rarely affected by pests. No routine pest control is necessary.
Disease Management: Very hardy and disease-resistant. Ensure good airflow and avoid overcrowding to prevent fungal issues. Remove any dead or decaying foliage to maintain plant health.
