Austroderia fulvida - End of Crop

Austroderia fulvida, commonly known as toetoe (pronounced "toy-toy"), is a striking, tall perennial grass native to New Zealand, known for its large, feathery flower plumes and robust growth. It forms dense clumps of long, arching, green leaves that can turn golden-yellow in autumn, with tall flower stems that rise above the foliage, bearing creamy-yellow plumes in late summer to autumn.

In the garden, Austroderia fulvida is ideal for creating dramatic vertical accents, as a background plant in large borders, or for native plantings and coastal gardens. Its imposing size and distinctive plumes make it a focal point, suitable for large-scale landscapes, where it can be used to add texture and movement.

Toetoe prefers full sun to light shade and thrives in a range of soil types, from dry to moist, but well-drained conditions are ideal. It is particularly well-suited to coastal environments, being wind and salt spray tolerant. When planting, a spacing of about 1.5m to 2m between each plant is recommended to accommodate its size and spread.

At flowering time the plant has an overall height of about 3.5m making it one of the larger species of New Zealand native grasses.

Trimming: Prune Austroderia fulvida (Toetoe) in late winter or early spring. Cut back old, dead foliage and flower stalks to encourage new growth and maintain a tidy appearance.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower plumes after they have faded to prevent self-seeding and to maintain the plant's appearance.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, which can lead to excessive foliage at the expense of flowers.

Watering: Water young plants regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Austroderia fulvida is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but monitor for signs of aphids or spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or introduce natural predators like ladybirds.

Disease Management: Austroderia fulvida is typically disease-resistant. However, ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues. If signs of disease appear, such as discoloured or wilting leaves, remove affected areas and apply a suitable fungicide if necessary.
