Austroderia richardii, formerly known as Cortaderia richardii and commonly referred to as Toe Toe, is a striking New Zealand native grass valued for its tall, creamy-white flower plumes that appear from late Spring through Summer. These feathery spikes rise well above its arching green foliage, creating a bold, textural statement in the landscape.

Ideal for native gardens, large-scale plantings, and coastal or exposed sites, this hardy species thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It tolerates wind, salt spray, and periods of dryness once established. Space plants 1.5–2m apart to allow their full form to develop.

Reaches up to 2.5–3m tall in flower and 1.5–2m wide, forming a commanding clump with dramatic seasonal presence.

Trimming: Cut back spent flower stems and remove old or dead foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Use caution when handling, as leaves have sharp edges.

Deadheading: Not essential but recommended if you wish to limit self-seeding and maintain a tidier appearance.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring if growth is slow or soil is poor. Generally low-maintenance in nutrient-rich conditions.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, this species is drought-tolerant but will appreciate occasional watering during extended dry periods. Ensure soil is well-drained.

Pest Control: Largely pest-free—no routine treatment needed.

Disease Management: Very hardy and resistant to disease. Maintain airflow by removing dense, old growth annually to discourage fungal issues. Avoid overhead watering where possible.
