Adiantum hispidulum

Adiantum hispidulum, commonly known as the Rosy Maidenhair Fern or Rough Maidenhair Fern, is a small fern in the family Pteridaceae with a widespread distribution, including New Zealand. This charming fern is characterized by its light red fronds that mature to a deep green. The fronds, which are finely divided and delicate, typically reach lengths of 30 to 50 cm. The fern itself can grow to a height of 1.5 metres when mature, forming a dense and attractive clump.

Ideal for shaded borders, woodland gardens, and as an understory plant beneath taller trees, Adiantum hispidulum is perfect for naturalistic and ornamental plantings. It is also highly effective for underplanting and works well in revegetation projects. This fern thrives in part shade to full shade and prefers moist, well-draining, humus-rich soil. It can tolerate exposed conditions but looks best in a protected position away from draughts. Regular watering is essential to maintain soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Mulching helps conserve moisture and provides organic material that enriches the soil. Minimal maintenance is required; simply remove any old or damaged fronds to keep the plant looking its best. Note that this fern is frost tender and may need protection in colder climates.

Adiantum hispidulum is popular both as an indoor and outdoor fern. Its evergreen nature and finely divided fronds provide year-round beauty, enhancing the natural charm of shaded garden areas and making it a versatile addition to any garden.

  • Trimming: Remove any browned or damaged fronds regularly to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage new growth. Avoid heavy pruning, as this fern grows slowly.
  • Fertilising: Feed with a diluted liquid fertiliser or slow-release fertiliser formulated for ferns during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid over-fertilising to prevent damage to delicate roots.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water more frequently during dry periods or in warmer months, ensuring good drainage.
  • Pest Control: Rarely affected by pests. However, monitor for scale insects on the stems or undersides of fronds. Remove them manually or treat with insecticidal soap.
  • Disease Management: This fern is disease-resistant. To avoid root rot, plant in well-draining soil and ensure the pot or ground does not remain waterlogged. Maintain good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
