Acaena microphylla
Notify MeAcaena microphylla is a low-growing, evergreen ground cover native to New Zealand, known for its finely textured, bronze-tinged green foliage and dense, spreading habit. In summer, it produces small, ball-like flower heads followed by decorative reddish burrs that add seasonal interest and texture. Growing to just 5-10 cm high and spreading up to 60-90 cm wide, it's ideal for planting between pavers, on banks, or in rock, alpine, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Thrives in full sun to light shade with free-draining soil. Drought-tolerant once established and excellent for erosion control. Space plants 30-40 cm apart for ground coverage. Requires minimal maintenance-simply trim to shape or manage spread if necessary. Avoid planting near pathways if burrs are a concern for pets. A resilient, attractive ground cover for dry, exposed sites.
Trimming: Lightly trim to control spread and shape as needed, especially if it begins to encroach on nearby plants or pathways. Remove any dead or untidy growth in early spring.
Deadheading: Not necessary for plant health, but removing burr-like seed heads after flowering can help prevent unwanted self-seeding and spread, particularly in wild or open areas.
Fertilising: Typically requires little feeding. In poor soils, apply a light dose of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Acaena microphylla is drought-tolerant but appreciates occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Prefers free-draining soil.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free and low maintenance. No routine pest control is typically required.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, particularly in wetter climates. Remove any dead or diseased foliage to maintain plant health and vigour.
