Monstera deliciosa

Monstera deliciosa, popularly known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, is a striking tropical houseplant known for its large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves with unique perforations or holes, giving it a 'Swiss cheese' appearance. It is a great option for adding a lush, jungle-like feel to a room.

Monstera deliciosa thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers high humidity, well-drained soil and a consistent watering routine, allowing the soil to slightly dry between waterings. It's also a climber in its natural habitat, so providing it with a moss pole or similar support can encourage its growth. It's a fast-growing plant that can reach up to 2-3 metres indoors.

Like many houseplants, Monstera deliciosa can help improve indoor air quality. It can absorb toxins from the air, including formaldehyde, and release oxygen, contributing to a healthier living environment.

Please be aware that the plant is toxic if ingested, so keep it out of reach of pets and children.

Trimming: Remove yellowing, damaged, or old leaves at the base to keep the plant tidy. Trim back long stems as needed to control size and encourage a fuller shape.

Fertilising: Fertilise monthly through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between watering. During extreme dry periods, water more deeply, but avoid leaving the plant in waterlogged soil.

Pest Control: Watch for scale, mealybugs, mites, and thrips. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap, horticultural oil, or by wiping leaves with a damp cloth.

Disease Management: Monitor for root rot, leaf spot, and bacterial leaf diseases. Signs include yellowing leaves, black or brown spots, mushy stems, wilting despite moist soil, or an unpleasant smell from the roots. Improve airflow, avoid overwatering, remove affected foliage, and refresh poorly draining potting mix if needed.
