Buxus sempervirens Suffruticosa, commonly known as Dutch Box, is a compact, slow-growing evergreen valued for its small, rounded leaves and naturally tidy form. This cultivar is ideal for low hedging and edging, offering a fine-textured look and excellent shape retention with minimal trimming. Its dense growth makes it a favourite for knot gardens and intricate borders.
Best suited to formal, cottage, and traditional garden styles where low structure and detail are desired.
Plant in full sun to part shade, in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. For edging or low hedging, space 20–30 cm apart to form a close, compact line.
Mature size: Grows slowly to around 50 cm high and wide, maintaining a tight, mounded shape.
Trimming: Trim lightly in late spring to maintain its compact, rounded form. Ideal for low hedging and edging, it responds well to regular shaping—an additional trim in late summer will help retain a neat appearance. Avoid trimming in autumn to prevent frost damage to new growth.
Deadheading: Not required, as this cultivar is grown for its dense evergreen foliage.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy, tight growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers which may cause overly soft or leggy growth.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during establishment and water during dry periods. Ensure good drainage, particularly in compacted soils or containers, to prevent root issues.
Pest Control: Monitor for signs of Buxus psyllid and leafminer—distorted or cupped leaves may indicate a problem. Treat early with horticultural oil or a systemic insecticide.
Disease Management: Susceptible to Buxus blight and root rot. Watch for leaf yellowing or drop, black spots, and stem lesions. Improve air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and promptly remove any affected foliage. Apply a fungicide if symptoms develop.
