Stipa gigantea

Stipa gigantea, commonly known as Giant Feather Grass or Golden Oats, is an imposing and elegant ornamental grass that creates a striking presence in the garden. Its fine, arching green foliage forms a dense clump at the base, while tall, golden flower spikes rise dramatically above the plant in late spring and summer. These airy, oat-like flowers shimmer in the sunlight and sway gently in the breeze, providing both texture and movement to any garden design.

Perfect for adding vertical interest, Stipa gigantea is well-suited to dry, sunny borders, gravel gardens, and prairie-style planting schemes. It also works beautifully as a backdrop for other flowering perennials or as a standalone focal point. The golden hues of the flowers complement a wide range of colour schemes, from soft pastels to bold Mediterranean tones.

This grass thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soils, tolerating poor or sandy conditions. It is highly drought-resistant once established, making it ideal for water-wise gardens. For optimal impact, space plants about 1 to 1.5 metres apart, giving them plenty of room to grow and showcase their impressive height.

At maturity, Stipa gigantea can reach up to 2.5 metres in height, with its arching flower stems towering above the evergreen base, which remains a more modest 60 cm in height. The flowers provide long-lasting visual interest, often persisting into Autumn, while the finely textured foliage adds year-round structure to the garden.

Trimming: Trim back old foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Avoid cutting into the crown, as this can damage the plant.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not necessary, but you can remove spent flower stalks to maintain a tidy appearance if desired.

Fertilising: Stipa gigantea thrives in poor to moderately fertile soils. Apply a light feed of balanced fertiliser in spring if growth appears weak, but excessive feeding can reduce its hardiness.

Watering: This grass is drought-tolerant once established. Water during extended dry periods, especially in the first growing season.

Pest Control: Rarely affected by pests, but watch for aphids on new growth. A strong jet of water or insecticidal soap can help control infestations.

Disease Management: Stipa gigantea is largely disease-free. However, avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root rot. Ensure good drainage to maintain plant health.
