Phormium tenax is a bold, upright New Zealand native grown for its strong, sword-like foliage and architectural form. Its long, fibrous leaves create a striking vertical accent, making it a reliable choice for adding year-round structure, texture, and presence to the landscape.

It is well suited to coastal planting, native gardens, contemporary landscapes, and large mixed borders. Phormium tenax also works well as a feature plant, in mass planting, or used to anchor dry garden schemes and exposed sites where tough, structural plants are needed.

This plant performs best in full sun to part shade and grows well in a wide range of soils, provided they are well drained. Once established it tolerates dry periods, wind, and coastal conditions well, though it also handles soils with consistent moisture. Allow around 1.5m to 2m spacing so plants can develop their full shape without crowding.

At maturity, it forms a large, upright clump reaching around 2-3m high and 2m wide, with a strong, sculptural habit.

Trimming: Phormium tenax benefits from light tidying rather than hard pruning. Remove damaged, dead or tatty leaves by cutting them cleanly at the base, and trim away any old flower stalks once they have finished. Avoid cutting healthy leaves halfway through, as this can leave the plant looking untidy.

Deadheading: Deadheading is mainly limited to removing spent flower stalks after flowering. Cut the stalks back to the base to keep the plant neat and reduce unnecessary energy use.

Fertilising: Phormium tenax is not a heavy feeder, but an application of balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring can support healthy growth, especially in poorer soils or container plantings. Avoid overfeeding, as this can lead to soft, weak growth.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase to help the root system develop well. Once established, Phormium tenax is fairly drought tolerant, but it will benefit from watering during prolonged dry periods, particularly in very free-draining soils or containers.

Pest control: This plant is generally trouble free, but slugs and snails may damage young growth, and mealybugs can occasionally appear in crowded leaf bases. Check plants regularly and treat pests promptly with suitable controls.

Disease management: Phormium tenax can be affected by root rot in poorly drained soils and may occasionally develop fungal issues in damp, stagnant conditions. Signs to look out for include yellowing leaves, wilting despite moist soil, or rotting at the base. Improve drainage, remove affected growth, and apply a suitable fungicide where necessary.
