Lomandra Nyalla
Lomandra Nyalla. A compact-growing grass with blue-grey, strappy foliage and an upright habit. Flowering in late spring, small tightly-clustered cream-yellow flowers appear on spikes which sit just above the foliage. Drought tolerant once established. Position in full sun to heavy shade. Will tolerate heat and coastal conditions. Plant in containers or general garden borders. Evergreen. Hardy. 80cm x 80cm.
Trimming: Lomandra ‘Nyalla’ is very low-maintenance and usually only needs a tidy-up every few years. Remove old or damaged foliage and, if needed, cut the plant back lightly in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh new growth.
Fertilising: Apply a light dose of general-purpose or slow-release fertiliser in spring to keep the foliage healthy and vigorous. Avoid heavy feeding, especially in richer soils.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, then only during extended dry periods or extreme drought. Once established, ‘Nyalla’ is notably drought tolerant, but it performs best in well-drained soil and should not sit wet for long periods.
Pest control: Generally very resistant to pests, though mealy bugs can occasionally appear, especially if the plant is under stress. Check the foliage base and treat infestations early with an appropriate insect control or horticultural treatment.
Disease management: Disease issues are uncommon, but watch for leaf spot, which appears as brown or black marks on the leaves, and root rot in poorly drained or waterlogged soils. Remove affected foliage, improve drainage, and avoid overwatering to keep the plant healthy.
