Liriope muscari
Notify MeLiriope muscari is a hardy, evergreen perennial with strappy, deep green foliage that forms neat, grass-like clumps. In late summer to early autumn, it produces spikes of small, lavender-purple flowers, adding a splash of colour to shady areas. These flowers are often followed by ornamental black berries, extending its seasonal interest. Low-maintenance and tolerant of a variety of conditions, this plant is a reliable choice for year-round texture.
Perfect for borders, underplanting shrubs, or as ground cover, it suits woodland, formal, and contemporary gardens. Thrives in partial to full shade but can also tolerate sun, provided the soil remains moist. Prefers well-draining, humus-rich soil and should be spaced 30 to 40 cm apart when mass planted.
Mature size: Grows up to 40 cm tall and 30 cm wide, forming dense, compact clumps over time.
Trimming: Trim back foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth appears to maintain a tidy appearance. Cut to just above ground level.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy foliage and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during dry periods, especially in summer. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though snails or slugs may occasionally damage foliage. Use snail traps or natural deterrents if necessary.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of fungal leaf spots in overly damp conditions. Remove affected leaves and improve air circulation.
