Iris sibirica Silver Edge
Iris sibirica 'Silver Edge' is a graceful, clump-forming perennial known for its elegant violet-blue flowers edged with a fine line of silver-white. Flowering in late spring to early summer, the delicate flowers rise above narrow, upright green foliage that adds structure even when not in flower. Reaching approximately 70-90 cm high and 40-50 cm wide, it’s ideal for cottage, mixed border, and moisture-loving garden styles.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with moist, free-draining, humus-rich soil. Performs best with consistent moisture, especially during the growing season. Space plants 40-50 cm apart for airflow and natural clump formation. Cut back flower stems after flowering and remove old foliage in late autumn or early spring. A refined, easy-care perennial that brings vertical interest and soft colour to sunny or damp garden spaces.
Trimming: Cut back flower stems to the base after flowering to tidy the plant and redirect energy into root and leaf development. In late autumn, remove all spent and yellowing foliage to reduce overwintering pests and diseases.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers promptly to improve appearance and encourage a longer flowering period, though deadheading is not essential for overall health.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. In nutrient-poor soils, a light liquid feed after flowering can support root development and next season’s blooms.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and through dry spells, especially in spring and early summer during active growth and flowering. Prefers moist but well-drained soil.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, slugs or snails may feed on new shoots-use organic slug control if necessary.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues such as leaf spot. Avoid waterlogged conditions, particularly in winter. Remove any diseased or discoloured foliage promptly to maintain plant health. Divide clumps every 3-4 years to prevent overcrowding and improve vigour.
