Dianella Tas Red

Dianella Tas Red is an Australian flax lily with wide green leaves that in cooler climates redden at the base. Large purple berries in summer and spring attract birds. Position in full sun to part shade. Drought tolerant once established. Plant in containers, borders and en masse. Hardy. Evergreen. 50cm x 50cm.

Trimming: Remove old, damaged, or untidy leaves as needed to keep Dianella ‘Tas Red’ looking fresh. It naturally forms a neat clump, so regular hard pruning is not usually needed, though older plants can be cut back lightly every few years to encourage fresh growth.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower stems once flowering has finished, particularly after the berries have dropped, to keep the plant tidy. This is mainly for appearance rather than plant health.

Fertilising: Apply a light dressing of balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring if needed, especially in poorer soils. Dianella ‘Tas Red’ is not a heavy feeder, so a modest approach is best.

Watering: Water regularly while establishing, then only during extended dry periods. Once established, Dianella ‘Tas Red’ is drought tolerant and generally low maintenance in free-draining soil.

Pest control: This plant is generally pest resistant, but check occasionally for mealybugs or other sap-sucking insects if growth looks stressed. Treat early with horticultural oil or a suitable control if needed.

Disease management: Disease problems are usually limited, though fungal issues or rot can develop in overly damp conditions. Signs to watch for include browning foliage, collapse at the base, or general decline. Ensure good drainage, avoid overwatering, and remove affected material promptly.
