Carex dipsacea is a hardy, native New Zealand sedge known for its fine, arching foliage in rich shades of olive-green to copper-bronze. This clump-forming grass adds subtle texture and colour to naturalistic plantings and performs well in damp or wet conditions. Its year-round form and changing tones through the seasons make it a versatile addition to the landscape.

Ideal for mass planting, edging, or as underplanting for larger shrubs and trees. Suits native, contemporary, and wild garden styles where low-maintenance texture is desired.

Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Prefers moist to wet soils and tolerates periodic inundation, making it suitable for rain gardens or pond margins. Space plants approximately 40 cm apart to allow for natural spread.

Forms a dense clump reaching 50–60 cm in height and width.

Trimming: Trim back older or damaged foliage in late winter or early spring to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage fresh growth. For mass plantings, use shears to shape as needed.

Deadheading: Not required, as Carex dipsacea is grown for its foliage rather than flowers.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can cause leggy growth.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in extended dry periods, especially if planted in full sun. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Monitor for occasional aphids or scale insects, especially in warmer months, and treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.

Disease Management: Rarely troubled by disease. Ensure good air circulation and avoid waterlogged soils to prevent root rot or fungal issues. Remove any affected foliage promptly to maintain plant health.
