Beschorneria yuccoides

Beschorneria yuccoides is a bold, evergreen perennial forming large rosettes of leathery, sword-like grey-green leaves that arch gracefully. In late spring through summer, it produces tall, striking red flowering stalks reaching up to 2 metres, adorned with pendulous green flowers tinged with red. Its dramatic form and texture bring strong architectural presence to the landscape.

Well-suited to coastal, Mediterranean, dry, and contemporary gardens, it makes a strong statement in borders, gravel gardens, or as a feature plant in large containers.

Prefers full sun and well-draining soil. Thrives in dry to moderately moist conditions and benefits from shelter in cooler regions. Space plants 80–100 cm apart to accommodate their spreading form.

Mature size forms clumps up to 1 metre wide with flowering spikes reaching 1.5–2.5 metres tall.

Trimming: Requires little trimming. Remove spent flower stalks and any dead or damaged leaves at the base to keep the rosette neat and healthy.

Deadheading: Not applicable, as it flowers once before the main rosette dies back. Remove the flowering stem after it fades, allowing offsets (pups) to take over.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. You can supplement with a diluted liquid feed during the active growing period to encourage vigorous foliage and flowering.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and during prolonged dry spells. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but will perform best with occasional deep watering. Avoid waterlogging by ensuring excellent drainage.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though young plants may attract slugs or snails. Use slug bait or physical barriers if needed.

Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Watch for signs of rot (wilting, blackened base, or mushy leaves), especially in wet or heavy soils. Improve drainage and reduce watering if symptoms appear.
