Apodasmia similis, commonly known as oioi or jointed wire rush, is a distinctive New Zealand native reed-like plant with fine, upright stems and subtle bronze-green colouring that intensifies in cooler weather. Its graceful, arching form and textural quality make it ideal for adding movement and a naturalistic feel to landscape designs. Tiny, reddish-brown flowering spikes appear at the stem tips in summer, adding seasonal interest.
Well-suited to coastal, native, and wetland-style gardens, it also performs well in mass plantings, revegetation projects, or as an accent in contemporary landscapes.
Thrives in full sun to part shade and tolerates wet or seasonally damp soils, including coastal and saline conditions. Space plants 50–60 cm apart for full coverage in naturalistic groupings.
Mature size: Typically reaches 1–1.2 metres high and 1 metre wide, forming a softly arching, tufted clump.
Trimming: Minimal trimming is required. Remove dead or damaged stems in late winter or early spring to tidy the plant. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can affect its natural form.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as Oioi is grown for its fine, reed-like foliage and form rather than flowers.
Fertilising: Generally low-maintenance and not nutrient-hungry. In poor soils, a light application of slow-release native plant fertiliser in spring can support healthy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment, especially in dry or sandy soils. Once established, it is tolerant of dry conditions and coastal exposure. It can also grow in damp or boggy areas.
Pest Control: Rarely troubled by pests. Monitor occasionally for scale insects if grown in sheltered or humid spots, and treat with horticultural oil if needed.
Disease Management: Typically disease-resistant. Ensure good drainage if grown inland to prevent root issues. Remove any dead material to maintain airflow and reduce fungal risk.
