Pyrus pyrifolia Nashi Hosui is a vigorous, deciduous Asian pear variety valued for its round, golden-bronze fruit with a smooth skin and crisp, juicy texture. The fruit has a refreshing, sweet flavour with subtle floral notes and ripens in late summer to early autumn. White flowers appear in spring, providing ornamental interest before the fruit forms.
Ideal for edible, orchard, and home gardens, Pear Nashi Hosui is perfect as a specimen fruit tree or for mixed orchard planting. It thrives in full sun with fertile, well-draining soil and requires consistent watering during fruit development. Plant alongside another Nashi variety for best pollination. Space approximately 3 to 4 metres apart in orchard settings.
Forms a rounded, medium-sized tree reaching around 3 to 4 metres high and 3 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant. Shape into an open-centred form to improve airflow and light penetration. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches, and shorten vigorous upright shoots to encourage fruiting spurs. Light summer pruning can help control size.
Deadheading: Not applicable, but thinning fruitlets in early summer will improve fruit size and prevent branch strain.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, follow up with a liquid feed every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season to support healthy growth and fruit production.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and throughout flowering and fruiting. Keep soil evenly moist but well-drained. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Pest Control: Monitor for pear slug, codling moth, aphids and scale. Use neem oil, insecticidal soap or pheromone traps as needed. Netting may be required to protect fruit from birds.
Disease Management: Susceptible to pear scab and fireblight. Prune in dry weather to reduce infection risk. Remove and dispose of infected leaves, fruit or branches. Maintain good airflow through proper pruning and avoid overhead watering. Clean up fallen debris to reduce disease carryover.
