Prunus persica Garden Lady is a compact, deciduous peach variety bred for container growing and small gardens. In early spring, it produces a lovely display of pink flowers, followed by medium-sized, red-blushed fruit with juicy yellow flesh and rich, sweet flavour that ripens in mid to late summer. Its neat, rounded form and reliable cropping make it ideal for home gardeners with limited space.
Perfect for edible, courtyard, and contemporary gardens, Peach Garden Lady is well-suited to pots, sunny borders, or small orchard plantings. It thrives in full sun with fertile, free-draining soil and benefits from consistent watering and feeding through the growing season. Protect from late frosts during flowering. Space approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart for in-ground planting.
Forms a compact, rounded tree reaching around 1.5 to 2 metres high and wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring before bud burst to maintain an open, vase-shaped canopy. Remove any dead, damaged or inward-growing branches, and shorten vigorous shoots to encourage fruiting. Summer pruning after harvest helps control size and shape.
Deadheading: Not applicable, but thinning young fruit in early summer improves fruit size, reduces branch strain and promotes better ripening.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poorer soils, supplement with a liquid feed every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season to support strong growth and fruit development.
Watering: Water regularly during flowering, fruit set and dry spells. Maintain consistent soil moisture without waterlogging. Mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, leaf curl aphid and scale. Use neem oil or insecticidal soap if infestations appear. Protect ripening fruit from birds with netting if needed.
Disease Management: Susceptible to peach leaf curl. Spray with a copper-based fungicide during winter dormancy and again at bud swell. Remove any affected leaves and avoid overhead watering. Keep the canopy open to improve airflow, and dispose of fallen leaves and fruit to reduce disease carryover.
