Murraya koenigii (commonly known as the Curry Tree) is a small, evergreen tree valued for its highly aromatic leaves, which are widely used in South Asian and Southeast Asian cooking. The pinnate foliage has a distinct, spicy fragrance, and in Summer, the tree produces clusters of small white flowers followed by dark purple berries (not edible).
Ideal for edible, subtropical, or courtyard gardens, the Curry Tree thrives in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. It prefers a warm, sheltered position and should be protected from frost. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and easier harvesting. Space approximately 1.5-2 metres apart when planting in the ground or grow in a large container in cooler climates.
Forms a small, upright tree approximately 2-3 metres high and 1.5-2 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune lightly throughout the growing season to shape the tree and encourage bushier growth. Remove any leggy, dead, or crossing branches. A harder prune in late winter can help rejuvenate older plants and stimulate fresh flushes of leaves.
Deadheading: Not required, but you may remove spent flower clusters to prevent unwanted seed drop if self-seeding is an issue.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring and again in mid-summer. Alternatively, use a nitrogen-rich liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to promote leafy growth, especially if harvesting regularly.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Murraya koenigii is drought tolerant but benefits from consistent moisture during warm weather. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings - avoid waterlogging.
Pest Control: Usually pest-resistant, but occasionally susceptible to aphids, scale, or spider mites - especially in pots or sheltered spots. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease if grown in well-drained soil. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Ensure good air circulation around the plant, and remove any yellowing or diseased leaves promptly.
