Finger Lime

The Finger Lime, Citrus australasica, is a remarkable native shrub or small tree prized for its slender, elongated fruits filled with delicate, tangy pearls of citrus. Often referred to as "citrus caviar," the fruits provide an extraordinary burst of flavour and texture, making them a favourite among chefs and food enthusiasts. This evergreen plant also features small, glossy green leaves and charming white to pale pink flowers, which create a delightful contrast against its dense foliage.

The Finger Lime is a versatile addition to any garden, well-suited for edible landscapes, container planting, or as a unique ornamental feature. It works wonderfully in native or subtropical garden styles, where its fine texture and practical appeal are celebrated. Its dense, spiky growth also makes it a fantastic choice for hedging or screening, offering privacy while providing edible rewards.

Position your Finger Lime in a sunny to partially shaded spot for the best flowering and fruiting performance. It thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil that retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged. Regular watering is essential during the establishment phase and when fruiting, although mature plants show some drought tolerance.

Plant spacing should allow for its spreading habit, ideally keeping at least 1.5 to 2 metres between plants to ensure proper airflow and to allow the plant to flourish.

At maturity, the Finger Lime reaches a compact size of approximately 2 to 3 metres tall and 1 to 1.5 metres wide, making it perfect for smaller gardens or urban spaces. With its elegant growth form and productive nature, it is both an aesthetic and functional highlight in any garden.

Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage healthy growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches to improve airflow. Avoid heavy pruning as this can reduce next season’s fruit production.

Deadheading: Not required for Finger Lime.

Fertilising: Apply a citrus-specific fertiliser in early spring and again in late summer. Supplement with well-rotted compost or manure to improve soil fertility.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and ensure consistent moisture during dry periods, especially when the plant is flowering and fruiting. Avoid waterlogging, as Finger Lime prefers well-draining soil.

Pest Control: Watch for common citrus pests such as aphids, scale insects, and citrus leaf miners. Use horticultural oil or insecticidal soap to manage infestations.

Disease Management: Monitor for signs of root rot, which may occur in poorly drained soils. Prevent fungal diseases by ensuring good airflow and avoiding overhead watering. Treat with a fungicide if needed.
