Redcurrant Murrays Red

Currant Murrays Red is a deciduous shrub known for its clusters of vibrant red berries that appear in late summer and autumn. This hardy plant is not only ornamental but also produces berries that are excellent for making jams, jellies, and desserts.

Ideal for cottage, wildlife, and edible gardens, Currant Murrays Red can be used in mixed borders, as a hedge, or as part of a fruit garden. Its spring flowers attract pollinators, while the autumn berries provide food for birds, enhancing its value in wildlife gardens. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, it prefers well-drained soil with moderate moisture.

At maturity, this shrub reaches a height and spread of approximately 1.5-2m. For optimal growth, space the plants about 1 to 1.5 metres apart to allow them room to spread.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged wood and to maintain shape. After the fruiting season, cut back old canes to promote new growth.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring, and again in mid-summer if growth appears slow. Avoid over-fertilising, as it can lead to excessive leafy growth at the expense of fruit production.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during dry periods. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulching can help retain soil moisture.

Pest Control: Monitor for pests such as aphids, spider mites, and currant borers. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Introduce beneficial insects like ladybirds to naturally control pest populations.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of powdery mildew, leaf spot, and rust. Improve air circulation by proper spacing and pruning. Apply appropriate fungicides if necessary and remove any affected plant parts to prevent the spread of disease. Regularly clean up fallen debris around the base of the plant.
