Rubus Boysenberry Tasman is a thornless, New Zealand-bred variety celebrated for its large, juicy berries and excellent disease resistance. The fruit is dark purple, sweet, and aromatic—perfect for eating fresh or using in preserves and desserts. Flowering in late Spring, it produces heavy crops from mid to late Summer on second-year canes.
Ideal for edible gardens, home orchards, and berry fences, it complements lifestyle block, cottage, and productive garden styles.
Plant in full sun with well-draining, fertile soil and maintain consistent moisture during the growing season. Provide trellis or wire support for training canes. Space plants 1.5m apart for airflow and accessibility.
Mature size: Strong and spreading, with trailing canes up to 2m long and a total spread of around 1.5–2m.
Trimming: Prune in late winter once fruiting has finished. Cut all canes that have fruited back to ground level, as they won’t fruit again. Select 6–8 strong new canes from the current season to tie onto a support. Space canes well to encourage good airflow and light penetration, which improves fruit quality and reduces disease risk.
Deadheading: Not required, but remove any shrivelled or missed berries after harvest to help prevent pest and disease issues.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Apply a second light feed after harvest to support next season’s cane development. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil and improve structure.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, particularly during flowering and fruiting. Water deeply during dry periods. Mulch with organic material to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the crown.
Pest Control: Monitor for common pests like aphids, caterpillars, and spider mites. Treat early with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed. Birds are attracted to ripening fruit, so consider netting as the crop matures.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal diseases such as cane blight and botrytis. Remove and dispose of any infected or dead material. Avoid overhead watering and ensure soil is free-draining to prevent root rot.
