Blueberry Petite Blue is a compact, dwarf blueberry variety ideal for small spaces and container growing. It produces small to medium-sized berries with a rich, sweet flavour, ripening from mid to late Summer. Spring flowering is followed by attractive green foliage that shifts to red-orange in Autumn, offering ornamental value throughout the seasons.
Excellent for patios, balconies, or as a productive low hedge, it complements urban, cottage, and edible garden styles.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-draining, acidic soil. Keep soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruiting. Space plants approximately 0.8–1m apart if planting in groups.
Mature size: Naturally compact and rounded, growing to around 60–80cm tall and wide.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter to early spring while the plant is dormant. Remove any dead, damaged, or weak stems to maintain a compact, tidy shape. Minimal pruning is needed due to the plant’s naturally small, bushy habit—ideal for pots or small gardens.
Deadheading: Not necessary, but remove any shrivelled or unharvested berries after fruiting to keep the plant clean and reduce disease risk.
Fertilising: Apply a fertiliser suitable for acid-loving plants (such as for camellias or rhododendrons) in early spring. A second, lighter application in late summer may be used if growth appears slow or leaves pale. Avoid lime-based fertilisers.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during hot, dry spells. ‘Petite Blue’ thrives in consistently moist, well-drained acidic soil. Use an acidic mulch, like pine bark, to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pest Control: Typically pest-free, but birds may be attracted to the fruit—consider netting during the ripening period. Check for aphids or scale insects on new growth and treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if present.
Disease Management: Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. In humid conditions, monitor for powdery mildew—look for a white coating on the leaves. Improve airflow with light pruning and treat with a sulphur-based fungicide if needed.
