Blueberry Elliott

Blueberry Elliott is a vigorous, late-season blueberry variety prized for its firm texture and tangy-sweet flavour. Fruit ripens from late Summer into early Autumn, extending the harvest period in the home garden. This deciduous shrub features soft white Spring flowers and striking red foliage in Autumn, offering multi-season interest.

Ideal for extending the fruiting season in edible gardens, it also suits lifestyle blocks, modern, and mixed planting schemes.

Plant in full sun with free-draining, acidic soil. Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly through flowering and fruit development. Space plants 1.2–1.5m apart to ensure healthy growth and productive yields.

Mature size: Grows into a tall, upright shrub reaching approximately 1.8–2m high and 1.2–1.5m wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter to early spring while the plant is dormant. Remove any dead, damaged, or spindly wood, and thin out crowded growth to maintain an open shape. On mature plants, remove up to a third of the oldest canes at ground level to encourage fresh, productive shoots.

Deadheading: Not required, but any dried or leftover berries should be removed after fruiting to keep the plant tidy and reduce the risk of fungal issues.

Fertilising: Apply an acid-specific fertiliser (suitable for rhododendrons or camellias) in early spring. A second, lighter feed may be applied in late summer if the plant shows signs of nutrient deficiency. Avoid lime-based products.

Watering: Provide regular water during establishment and dry periods, especially during flowering and fruit development. ‘Elliott’ is a late-fruiting variety and may need extra watering late into summer. Mulch with pine bark or other acidic organic material to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though birds are attracted to the fruit—netting is often needed. Check for aphids and scale insects on young growth and treat promptly with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if necessary.

Disease Management: Ensure well-draining, acidic soil to prevent root rot. Powdery mildew may develop in humid conditions—look for a white powder on leaves and treat with a sulphur-based fungicide if needed. Maintain airflow with regular pruning and good spacing.
