Avocado Bacon
Notify MeAvocado Bacon is a cold-tolerant avocado cultivar producing medium to large, oval-shaped fruit with smooth, green skin and creamy, pale yellow flesh. Harvested from late Autumn through early Winter, Bacon avocados have a mild, buttery flavour and are excellent for salads, spreads, and slicing.
Ideal for subtropical to warm temperate gardens, this variety prefers a sunny, sheltered position with free-draining soil and protection from heavy frost. It benefits from regular watering during dry periods and good air circulation. Plant at least 5–7m apart from other avocados for optimal growth and pollination.
Matures to around 8–10m tall and 5–7m wide, forming a rounded, evergreen tree with year-round foliage and seasonal fruit.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape, remove crossing or dead branches, and allow light into the canopy. Avoid heavy pruning, as it can reduce fruiting.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as avocados do not require deadheading.
Fertilising: Feed with a citrus or avocado-specific fertiliser in early spring, mid-summer, and early autumn. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure to support soil health.
Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the establishment phase and during flowering and fruit development. Mature trees tolerate some dryness but prefer consistent moisture—avoid waterlogging.
Pest Control: Monitor for scale insects, mites, and leafrollers. Use horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if infestations occur. Protect young trees from grass competition and root damage.
Disease Management: Susceptible to root rot (Phytophthora). Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering. Yellowing leaves and dieback are signs to watch for. Use fungicidal drenches if needed and maintain a mulch layer without touching the trunk.
