Apple Splendour

Malus domestica Splendour is a late-season apple valued for its exceptionally sweet flavour and low acidity, making it a favourite for fresh eating. The fruit is medium to large, with smooth, bright pink-red skin and crisp, pale flesh. Flowering in mid-spring, it ripens in late autumn and stores well, maintaining its quality for several months.

Well suited to home orchards, family gardens, and lifestyle blocks. Works beautifully in productive or traditional garden settings.

Plant in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture through the growing season. A compatible pollinator nearby will help maximise fruiting. Space trees 3–4 metres apart for healthy growth and airflow.

Mature size: Grows to about 4–5 metres tall with a rounded, moderately spreading canopy.

Trimming: Prune in winter to maintain a balanced shape and encourage good light and airflow through the canopy. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning, which can reduce fruiting.

Deadheading: Not applicable for fruit trees.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to support growth and fruit production. Apply a layer of compost or well-rotted manure annually to improve soil structure and nutrient availability.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the establishment phase and water during dry periods, especially in summer when the fruit is developing. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.

Pest Control: Watch for codling moth and woolly aphids. Use pheromone traps to monitor and control moths, and prune out or treat aphid-infested areas with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.

Disease Management: Generally a hardy cultivar, but susceptible to powdery mildew and occasionally apple scab. Look for white, powdery growth on young shoots or scabby patches on leaves and fruit. Remove infected parts and apply fungicide in early spring if needed. Maintain airflow with regular pruning to reduce disease pressure.
