Apple Pacific Rose

Malus domestica Pacific Rose is a premium dessert apple known for its glossy rose-pink skin, crisp texture, and refreshingly sweet, low-acid flavour. Developed in New Zealand, this late-season variety produces medium to large fruit that stores exceptionally well while retaining its crunch and flavour. Its juicy, firm flesh makes it ideal for fresh eating and lunchboxes.

A great choice for home orchards and modern edible gardens, especially where a reliably sweet, low-maintenance variety is desired.

Plant in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture. Requires a compatible pollinator such as Fuji or Braeburn for optimal fruiting.

Mature size: Grows to 3–4 metres high and wide as a free-standing tree, or smaller when grafted onto dwarfing rootstock.

Trimming: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant to create an open, well-balanced canopy. Remove any dead, damaged, or inward-crossing branches to improve airflow and light penetration, which encourages even ripening and helps prevent disease.

Deadheading: Not applicable for apple trees.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support growth and fruit development. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure, keeping it away from the trunk, to retain moisture and enrich the soil.

Watering: Water deeply and consistently, especially while establishing and during dry periods. Ensure good drainage, particularly in heavier soils, to avoid root problems.

Pest Control: Monitor for codling moth, aphids, and apple sawfly. Use pheromone traps to manage moth populations and treat aphids with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed. Good orchard hygiene helps minimise pest pressure.

Disease Management: 'Pacific Rose' has moderate disease resistance but may still be affected by apple scab and powdery mildew. Watch for leaf spots, fruit blemishes, or white powdery growth. Prune to maintain airflow, clear fallen debris, and apply fungicides if symptoms appear.
