Alpinia galanga

Alpinia galanga, also known as Thai Ginger or Galangal, is a tropical rhizomatous perennial prized for its lush, upright foliage and aromatic underground stems. Long, lance-shaped leaves emerge on tall canes, creating a bold, architectural presence in the garden. Small white flowers with red markings may appear in warm conditions, typically in late summer.

This plant is well suited to subtropical and tropical gardens, edible landscapes and large containers. Plant in a warm, sheltered position with rich, moist, well-drained soil and partial shade to full sun. Protect from heavy frost and mulch well to conserve moisture.

Mature size: Grows up to 2 m tall with a spread of approximately 1 m.

Trimming: Remove spent or damaged canes at the base in late winter to maintain vigour and shape.

Deadheading: Not required, as flowering is occasional and secondary to foliage and rhizome use.

Fertilising: Feed with a balanced liquid or slow-release fertiliser in spring and midsummer to support lush growth.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells. Water regularly when grown in containers.

Pest Control: Generally trouble-free. Check for spider mites or aphids in hot, dry conditions and treat as needed.

Disease Management: Watch for root rot in poorly drained soils. Improve drainage and avoid overwatering. Remove any yellowing or soft foliage.
