Viburnum plicatum - Field Grown

Viburnum plicatum, commonly known as Japanese Snowball or Doublefile Viburnum, is a deciduous shrub admired for its layered, horizontal branching and impressive floral display. It features dark green, deeply veined leaves that turn to shades of red and purple in the autumn, adding seasonal interest to the garden. In the spring, it produces large, showy clusters of white flowers that resemble snowballs, which later give way to red berries that mature to black, providing food for birds.

This versatile shrub can be used in various garden settings, including formal gardens, woodland edges, and as a specimen plant or part of a mixed border. It thrives best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. For optimal growth and health, it's beneficial to mulch the base and prune lightly after flowering to maintain its shape and encourage more vigorous flowering.

Viburnum plicatum typically grows to a height and spread of about 2-3m.

Field-grown plants are grown directly in open fields, enabling their roots to spread and develop naturally, resulting in larger size, established root systems, and increased resilience. When transporting these plants, hessian, a coarse fabric made from natural fibres like jute, is commonly used to wrap their roots, providing protection during transportation and handling.
