Styrax japonicus, often known as the Japanese Snowbell, is a beautiful deciduous tree renowned for its numerous, bell-shaped white blooms that hang elegantly from the branches in late spring and early summer and are accompanied by a pleasant, light fragrance.
Well-drained, fertile soil is ideal and it can tolerate a wide range of pH levels. It prefers full sun to moderate shade and a sheltered position away from severe winds. It is fairly tough and drought-tolerant once planted, though it benefits from regular watering during extended dry seasons.
The ornamental appeal and compact stature of the Japanese Snowbell make it an ideal choice as a specimen tree, bringing a distinct, graceful aspect to the garden. Its low-lying branches can also give some shade, making it ideal for underplanting with shade-loving plants.
At maturity, the Styrax japonicus typically reaches a height of 8-12 metres. However, its slow to moderate growth rate allows it to be easily managed and maintained at a smaller size if needed.
Field-grown plants are grown directly in open fields, enabling their roots to spread and develop naturally, resulting in larger size, established root systems, and increased resilience. When transporting these plants, hessian, a coarse fabric made from natural fibres like jute, is commonly used to wrap their roots, providing protection during transportation and handling.
