Thuja Green Giant
Thuja Green Giant is a fast-growing tree ideal for shelter belts, hedging, or as a striking ornamental backdrop. A cross between Thuja standishii and Thuja plicata, it is renowned for its disease resistance, low maintenance, and ability to establish quickly. Its dense, rich evergreen foliage maintains its colour year-round, forming a natural pyramidal to conical shape.
Capable of growing up to 90cm per year in ideal conditions, it is perfect for creating a tall windbreak hedge or screen. Space plants approximately 1.5m-2.5m apart for an effective screen. Thrives in a variety of conditions and adapts well to trimming or natural growth. With its rapid establishment and lush, dark green foliage, Thuja Green Giant is an excellent choice for privacy, shelter, and year-round landscape appeal.
Reaches a mature height of 10–12 metres and a spread of around 3 metres.
Trimming: Trim in late spring or early summer to maintain a dense, uniform shape. For hedging, light annual pruning helps control height and width while encouraging bushy growth. Avoid cutting into old wood, as new growth may not regenerate.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth. A second feed in midsummer can further enhance density and health.
Watering: Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots. Once mature, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but occasionally susceptible to bagworms or spider mites. Inspect foliage regularly and treat infestations with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Highly resistant to most diseases, but ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues like root rot. Avoid waterlogging by planting in well-drained soil.
