Phyllocladus trichomanoides

Phyllocladus trichomanoides, commonly known as Tanekaha or Celery Pine, is a distinctive New Zealand native tree valued for its layered, fern-like branchlets and straight, upright growth habit. The foliage consists of flattened, leaf-like cladodes that give the tree a graceful, airy appearance, while the bark peels attractively in papery flakes. Small cones appear from late spring to summer, adding subtle seasonal interest.

Ideal for native, forest, and coastal gardens, Phyllocladus trichomanoides is perfect as a specimen tree or for planting in mixed native groves. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil with moderate moisture. Tolerant of wind and light frost once established. Space approximately 3 to 4 metres apart for naturalistic planting.

Forms a tall, upright tree reaching around 10 to 20 metres high and 4 to 6 metres wide.

Trimming: Minimal pruning is needed. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches to maintain a clean framework. Light shaping can be done in late winter if required, but avoid heavy pruning into mature wood.

Fertilising: Apply a slow-release, general-purpose fertiliser in early spring. In nutrient-poor soils, supplement with a balanced liquid feed every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season to support steady growth.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but will perform best with occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Prefers free-draining, slightly acidic soils.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Monitor young plants for scale insects or aphids, though these are rare. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

Disease Management: Rarely troubled by disease. Ensure good drainage to prevent root issues. Remove any discoloured or dead foliage promptly and maintain airflow around the plant to minimise fungal problems in humid conditions.
