Jasminum sambac
Notify MeJasminum sambac, often called Arabian jasmine, is a highly fragrant evergreen climber or shrub with glossy green leaves and clusters of pure white, star-shaped flowers. Flowering through the warmer months, its perfume is rich and sweet, carrying beautifully through the garden or into the home when cut.
This variety is ideal for training over trellises, growing in containers, or shaping as a compact shrub in warm, frost-free areas. It suits tropical, courtyard, and cottage gardens, where both its scent and evergreen foliage add lasting appeal.
Plant in full sun to part shade with free-draining soil and regular moisture during the growing season. Protect from heavy frost and prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape.
Mature size: Grows to around 2–3 m high and wide when supported, or smaller when clipped as a shrub.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth. Remove straggly stems if needed.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to prolong flowering and keep the plant tidy.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring and midsummer to support flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, keep soil evenly moist, especially in hot, dry weather.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, whitefly, or scale on young shoots and treat promptly if present.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow to prevent fungal issues. Avoid waterlogging to reduce the risk of root rot.
