Clematis Orange Peel
Notify MeClematis tangutica Orange Peel is a vigorous deciduous climber featuring lantern-shaped yellow flowers with a soft orange hue that appear from late summer into autumn. These are followed by silky, silver seed heads that add winter interest, while finely divided green foliage provides a light, airy backdrop.
Ideal for trellises, fences, pergolas, or weaving through shrubs and small trees, it suits cottage gardens, informal borders, and wild-style plantings. Prefers full sun to partial shade, with well-drained soil and consistent moisture. Keep roots cool with mulch or ground cover. Space 1.5 to 2 metres apart when planting in multiples. Grows 3 to 4 metres tall with a twining, arching habit and strong seasonal character.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to shape and remove spent stems. In late winter or early spring, cut back all stems to a pair of strong buds around 30cm above ground level to encourage fresh growth and flowering.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a general-purpose, slow-release fertiliser. A potassium-rich liquid feed can be applied monthly during the flowering period for best results.
Watering: Keep well-watered during the establishment phase and during prolonged dry spells, particularly in summer. Ensure soil remains moist but not waterlogged.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids on new growth; treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Susceptible to clematis wilt – sudden stem collapse is a key sign. Cut affected stems to healthy growth or ground level, and dispose of them to prevent spread. Ensure good air circulation and avoid damage to stems to reduce risk.
