Plum Elephant Heart - Bare-Rooted

Plum Elephant Heart stands out with its distinctive, large, heart-shaped fruits that have a deep, rich red flesh. Notable for its sweet, juicy flavor, this variety is highly favored for fresh eating, desserts, and canning. The tree produces white flowers in early spring, adding a decorative touch before the fruit sets.

Ideal for a variety of garden styles including traditional orchards and cottage gardens, it requires a sunny spot with well-drained soil to thrive. While this variety is self-fertile, planting it alongside another plum variety can enhance pollination and increase fruit yield. Spacing should be about 4m between trees to ensure ample growth and airflow. Elephant Heart typically reaches a height and spread of about 3-4m.

What is a bare-rooted tree?

Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport.

What are the benefits?

  • Less packaging and plastic waste involved in growing process and transportation.
  • Plant has more root mass as the roots have not been constricted and twisted by a pot.
  • They are easier to carry and plant as they are extremely lightweight.
  • Bare-rooted trees are cheaper as they do not come with soil and pots.
  • Planting bare-rooted trees in the winter follows the natural pattern of the seasons.
