Blueberry Reka is a vigorous, early-season blueberry bred in New Zealand for high productivity and adaptability. It produces medium to large berries with a tangy-sweet flavour and firm texture, ideal for fresh eating or cooking. Flowering begins in mid-Spring, with fruit ripening in early Summer. The foliage turns brilliant red in Autumn, adding seasonal colour.
Excellent for home orchards, edible borders, or container growing, it suits lifestyle block, cottage, and productive garden styles.
Plant in full sun with acidic, free-draining soil. Maintain consistent moisture throughout the growing season. Space plants 1.2–1.5m apart for healthy growth and airflow.
Mature size: Fast-growing and upright, reaching approximately 1.5–2m tall and 1.2m wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter to early spring during dormancy. Remove any dead, damaged, or overcrowded branches to maintain an open shape and encourage airflow. For mature plants, rejuvenate by cutting back up to a third of the oldest canes at ground level to stimulate fresh, vigorous growth.
Deadheading: Not required, but remove any leftover or shrivelled berries after harvest to keep the plant tidy and reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants (such as for rhododendrons or camellias). A second, lighter application in late summer can support ongoing growth if needed. Avoid lime or alkaline fertilisers to preserve soil acidity.
Watering: Provide consistent moisture, particularly during establishment and dry spells. ‘Reka’ thrives in moist, well-drained acidic soil and benefits from regular watering throughout flowering and fruiting. Apply mulch—such as pine bark—to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but protect fruit from birds using netting. Check for aphids or scale insects on young shoots and treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. In humid conditions, monitor for powdery mildew (white powdery patches on leaves) and treat with a sulphur-based fungicide if necessary. Regular pruning helps maintain airflow and reduce disease pressure.
