Berberis Kobold

Berberis thunbergii Kobold is a compact, slow-growing deciduous shrub with a neat, rounded shape and small, glossy green leaves that turn rich shades of red and orange in autumn. In spring, it produces small yellow flowers, followed by red berries that attract birds and add seasonal interest. Its dense, tidy form makes it an excellent low-maintenance choice for structured planting.

Ideal for formal, cottage, and low-maintenance gardens, it’s well-suited for borders, edging, or mass planting where year-round interest and compact size are desired.

Thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soil. Once established, it is drought tolerant and requires minimal pruning. Space plants approximately 40–50 cm apart for mass planting or low hedging.

Mature size: Grows to around 50–60 cm high and wide, forming a dense, rounded mound.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Lightly trim to shape, remove dead or damaged wood, and thin out congested growth. For hedging, a light summer trim will help maintain density and form.

Deadheading: Not required, as Berberis is grown for its foliage, form, and berries rather than prolonged flowering. Spent flowers will naturally give way to ornamental berries.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. In poor soils, an additional mid-summer feed may benefit younger plants or hedges.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Berberis is drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though aphids and scale insects can occasionally appear. Treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed.

Disease Management: Susceptible to powdery mildew, rust, and leaf spot in humid or poorly ventilated conditions. Ensure good air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and remove affected foliage. Apply a fungicide if symptoms persist.
