Acer Shishigashira - Bare-Rooted

Acer palmatum Shishigashira, also known as the Lion’s Head Maple, is a unique and compact Japanese maple celebrated for its tightly curled, crinkled foliage and dense, upright form. In spring and summer, its deep green leaves create a textured, almost sculptural effect. As autumn arrives, the foliage transforms into a dramatic blend of gold, orange, and crimson, clinging to the branches longer than many other maples for an extended seasonal display.

An excellent choice for feature planting, container growing, or adding architectural interest to Japanese, courtyard, or formal gardens. Best grown in a sheltered position with morning sun or dappled light, avoiding intense afternoon heat and wind exposure. Prefers moist, well-drained soil with good organic content, and should be spaced approximately 1.5 to 2 metres from neighbouring plants to accommodate its slow, upright growth.

Matures to around 2-3 metres tall and 1.5-2 metres wide, forming a narrow, upright tree with a distinctive, layered silhouette.

What is a bare-rooted tree?

Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport.

What are the benefits?

  • Less packaging and plastic waste involved in growing process and transportation.
  • Plant has more root mass as the roots have not been constricted and twisted by a pot.
  • They are easier to carry and plant as they are extremely lightweight.
  • Bare-rooted trees are cheaper as they do not come with soil and pots.
  • Planting bare-rooted trees in the winter follows the natural pattern of the seasons.

Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead or congested growth and refine the shape. Avoid heavy pruning and do not trim during late summer or autumn, as this can lead to frost-sensitive regrowth.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, low-nitrogen, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support steady growth and vibrant seasonal colour without encouraging overly soft new shoots.

Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, particularly during dry spells and summer heat. Water deeply during establishment and maintain consistent moisture to support strong seasonal transitions, avoiding waterlogged or overly dry soil.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though aphids or scale may appear on new growth in spring. Treat early with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if required.

Disease Management: Can be prone to root rot and leaf scorch if overexposed or poorly sited. Provide well-drained soil, avoid full afternoon sun and strong wind, and ensure regular watering to maintain plant health and leaf quality.
