Bambusa multiplex Gracilis

Bambusa multiplex Gracilis is a compact, clump-forming bamboo known for its bushy growth and refined appearance. A dwarf cultivar of the Bambusa multiplex species, it features densely packed canes and fine, bright green foliage that gives it a soft, lush texture. Its tight clumping habit makes it a popular choice for smaller gardens or confined spaces where a vertical screen or ornamental specimen is needed without spreading aggressively.

Excellent for compact hedging, narrow borders, or screening in tropical, subtropical, or Asian-style gardens. It is also well-suited for pots, courtyards, or balconies where a contained but lush effect is desired.

Performs best in full sun to part shade with well-drained, fertile soil. Regular watering promotes optimal density, though it is tolerant of short dry periods once established. Space plants approximately 0.8 to 1 metre apart for screening.

Grows to around 3 to 4 metres tall with a dense clump width of about 1 metre, maintaining a compact, upright form ideal for confined or narrow spaces.

Trimming: Prune annually in late winter to remove dead, weak, or overcrowded culms. For a clean, architectural look, remove lower branches to reveal the slender upright canes. Regular thinning helps maintain a tidy, open clump.

Deadheading: Not applicable, as this bamboo rarely flowers and is valued for its elegant foliage and form.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser to encourage strong, lush growth. A second application in mid-summer can support continued vigour. Mulching with organic matter also improves soil condition.

Watering: Requires regular watering during the establishment phase. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but thrives with consistent moisture, especially in dry or windy weather. Avoid soggy soils.

Pest Control: Generally resistant to pests. Monitor for scale insects or mealybugs; if present, treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Low risk of disease. Ensure good air circulation and avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot or fungal issues. Remove any dead or decaying material to keep the clump healthy.
