Buxus sempervirens - Ground Ball

Buxus sempervirens is a versatile and compact evergreen shrub, renowned for its ability to thrive in a variety of conditions and maintain a lush, green appearance all year round. This classic plant is particularly noted for its dense, small leaves and robust nature, making it an ideal choice for formal borders, hedging, or topiary art.

With its preference for well-drained soils and partial to full sun exposure, Buxus sempervirens can grow up to 1-2 metres high, presenting a naturally rounded shape that responds exceptionally well to pruning. This characteristic makes it a favourite among gardeners looking to impose a sense of order and structure within their landscapes, especially in geometric garden designs. It's also highly resilient to pests and diseases, ensuring a low-maintenance yet long-lasting presence in your garden.

Save yourself the effort of that initial shaping with this incredible spherical grade. Prefer a squared shape? Check out our Buxus Ground Squares here.

Trimming: Trim regularly to maintain the desired shape and size. Prune in late spring or early summer, avoiding heavy pruning during late summer or autumn to prevent frost damage to new growth.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers that can lead to excessive soft growth, which is more susceptible to pests and diseases.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during prolonged dry spells. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as boxwood leafminer, boxwood mite, and boxwood psyllid. Use appropriate insecticides or horticultural oil if infestations are detected.

Disease Management: Be vigilant for signs of box blight and root rot. Box blight appears as dark or brown spots on leaves and stems and can be treated with fungicides. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce disease risk. Improve soil drainage and remove affected plants if root rot occurs.
