Crassula ovata

Crassula ovata, commonly known as the Jade Plant, Money Plant or Lucky Plant, is a popular succulent originating from South Africa. Recognisable by its thick, woody stems and glossy, ovate, green leaves that sometimes have a tinge of red on their edges, it's an ideal choice for indoor gardening or warmer outdoor environments.

A well-cared-for Crassula ovata can reach up to 3 metres in height outdoors, but when grown indoors as a houseplant, it usually tops out at around 1 metre. It prefers a sunny location but can tolerate partial shade. In extreme sun, leaf tips might turn red as a protective measure. It prefers well-draining soil, which helps prevent issues with root rot. Overwatering is a common problem, so it's best to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

well-established Jade Plants may produce small white or pink, star-shaped flowers in late winter or early spring, but this is less common in plants kept indoors. Crassula ovata is also known for its longevity, with some plants living for multiple decades, making this resilient plant a long-term companion for your home or garden.
