Stewartia pseudocamellia

Stewartia pseudocamellia, commonly known as Japanese Stewartia, is a small to medium-sized, slow-growing, deciduous tree that offers multi-seasonal interest. Native to the mountain forests of Japan and Korea, this tree is a spectacle in any garden setting. It boasts cup-shaped, camellia-like white flowers with striking orange-yellow anthers that bloom during the summer months. The elliptical, dark green leaves turn into a vivid palette of reddish-orange and burgundy in the autumn, providing a stunning visual contrast.

This tree is not just about aesthetics; it's also about resilience. It thrives in moist, well-drained, organically rich, sandy loams and prefers full sun to partial shade. However, it is intolerant of drought and does not perform well in heavy, clay soils or those with poor drainage. It also requires a location sheltered from winter winds, especially in colder climates. With its multi-coloured, exfoliating bark and a height that can range from 3 to 12 metres, the Japanese Stewartia is a versatile and captivating addition to any garden.
