Sorbus aria, commonly known as Whitebeam, is a deciduous tree valued for its tidy form, silvery foliage, and seasonal interest. Its broad, ovate leaves emerge green with a distinctive white underside, giving the tree a shimmering appearance in the breeze. In Spring, it produces clusters of creamy-white flowering, followed by orange-red fruit in early Autumn that attracts birds and adds ornamental value.
Whitebeam is tolerant of dry, exposed conditions and urban environments, making it a versatile choice for street planting, shelterbelts, or as a feature tree in both formal and naturalistic settings. It performs best in full sun and well-drained soil, and requires minimal maintenance once established. Typically reaches 10–12 metres in height and 6–8 metres in width, forming a rounded crown with a strong, upright structure.
What is a bare-rooted tree?
Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport.
What are the benefits?
Trimming: Prune in Winter to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and maintain a strong structure. Minimal shaping is needed.
Fertilising: Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in early Spring if growth is slow or soil is poor, though often not required once established.
Watering: Water during establishment and prolonged dry periods. Drought-tolerant once mature.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids and sawfly larvae. Treat with insecticidal soap or prune out affected shoots if needed.
Disease Management: Generally low-maintenance, but watch for fireblight or leaf spot. Prune affected areas and ensure good air circulation.
