Notify MeSalix × sepulcralis Chrysocoma, commonly known as Weeping Golden Willow, is a striking deciduous tree with long, pendulous branches and bright golden-yellow young stems. In early spring, soft silvery catkins appear before the narrow, light green leaves emerge, creating a graceful, cascading silhouette that brings movement and softness to the landscape.
Thriving in full sun and moist, well-drained soil, Salix sepulcralis Chrysocoma is ideal for parkland, rural, or waterside plantings where its weeping form can be fully appreciated. It prefers consistently damp conditions and grows quickly, making it a popular choice for adding structure and shade. At maturity, it typically reaches 10–15 metres tall and 10 metres wide, forming an impressive and elegant feature tree.
Trimming: Prune in late winter to remove any dead, damaged, or congested growth and to maintain a strong central framework. Light shaping may be done after leaf fall, but avoid hard pruning unless rejuvenating older trees, as excessive cutting can spoil the tree’s graceful weeping habit.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous seasonal growth, especially in nutrient-poor soils or where rapid establishment is desired.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent moisture levels, especially in drier sites. Once established, it prefers reliably moist soil and benefits from supplemental watering during dry spells.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, willow beetles, and caterpillars during the growing season. Infestations can usually be controlled with horticultural oil, insecticidal soap, or biological controls where appropriate.
Disease Management: Susceptible to fungal diseases such as willow blight and rust, especially in humid or poorly ventilated sites. Ensure good air circulation, remove infected leaves and branches promptly, and avoid overhead watering to minimise risk.
