Robinia pseudoacacia Frisia is a striking deciduous tree known for its brilliant, golden-yellow foliage. Throughout spring and summer, its pinnate leaves glow with a luminous, golden hue, providing a bold contrast against its dark, deeply furrowed bark. In late spring to early summer, clusters of fragrant, white pea-like flowers appear, adding further interest and attracting pollinators.
It is an excellent specimen tree, providing vibrant color and a light, airy canopy. It thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, and is adaptable to harsh conditions and various soil types, including poor and dry soils. This tree suits a range of garden styles, including contemporary, Mediterranean, and cottage gardens.
Forms a neat rounded head tree, quite manageable in smaller gardens growing to approx. 7m tall and 5m wide.
Trimming: Trim in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and maintain a balanced shape. Avoid heavy pruning where possible, as Robinia can respond with vigorous, brittle regrowth.
Fertilising: Fertilise in spring with a general-purpose fertiliser if growth is weak, though established trees often need little feeding.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment, especially through the first summer. Once established, provide deep watering during extreme dry periods.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, scale, and leaf miners. Treat minor infestations with a strong water spray or insecticidal soap.
Disease Management: Monitor for powdery mildew, canker, and root rot. Signs include a white powdery coating on leaves, sunken or cracked bark, dieback, or yellowing foliage. Improve airflow, avoid waterlogged soil, prune out affected wood, and use an appropriate fungicide if required.
