Radermachera sinica, commonly called China doll, serpent tree or emerald tree, is grown for its foliage which features glossy, dark-green leaves that are bipinnate. Outdoors it will produce fragrant, trumpet-shaped, crinkly-petalled, white or yellow flowers that bloom in panicles at the leaf axils or branch ends in spring and summer.
It is an excellent quick-growing tree that can be kept as a pleached hedge or a narrow screen. It can be cut back to renew growth. Grows in full sun or part shade and only tolerates moderate frosts.
Radermachera sinica is also a very popular house plant due to its tolerance to warm dry air.
