Quercus suber, commonly known as the Cork Oak, is an evergreen tree native to the western Mediterranean regions. This tree is renowned for its thick, fissured, corky bark, which is harvested for commercial cork production and used in wine bottles and flooring.
The Cork Oak is a versatile tree that can be grown in various conditions, including coastal and windy sites. It is drought-hardy and can be used for multiple purposes such as hedging, screening and even topiary. Its small, oval, toothed leaves are dark green on the top and grey on the underside, adding to its aesthetic appeal. The tree also produces elongated ovoid acorns that grow either singly or in pairs, measuring 1.5-3cm in size.
With its large spreading canopy, Quercus suber makes an excellent street tree and is also ideal for creating a tough hedge or screen. Left to grow, it can reach between 6 to 15 metres tall.
