Pyrus salicifolia Pendula, commonly known as the Weeping Pear or Willow-leaved Pear, is a captivating deciduous tree with unique foliage and growth habit. In spring, its willow-like leaves emerge silver-white, transitioning to a grey-green hue during the summer months. The tree's structure forms beautiful tiers of branches that lend themselves well to trimming, creating a picturesque silhouette.

In addition to its striking foliage, Pyrus salicifolia Pendula is adorned with small, white blossoms in spring, enhancing its appeal with a touch of creamy white against the silvery backdrop of its leaves. This tree is not only a visual delight but also robust, capable of withstanding strong winds and drought conditions. Expected to reach a height of 4m and a width of 3m within ten years, it grows at a medium rate, achieving about 2m in height after five years. The Weeping Silver Pear is particularly stunning when placed against a dark background or when creating a serene and soft ambience in combination with white flowers. Its long, narrow, silver-grey leaves, covered in silky down, and the graceful, arching effect of its branches, along with the white spring blossoms followed by small, inedible fruits, make Pyrus salicifolia Pendula a standout addition, attracting bees and adding biodiversity to the garden.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and control the size. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to promote healthy growth. Light pruning can be done throughout the year if needed.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to weak growth susceptible to pests and diseases.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Pyrus salicifolia 'Pendula' is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent root rot.

Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids, caterpillars, and scale insects. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if necessary.

Disease Management: Be vigilant for signs of fire blight, a bacterial disease that causes wilting and blackened shoots. Remove and destroy affected branches promptly, disinfecting pruning tools between cuts. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to minimise fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and leaf spot. Ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot.
