Notify MePyrus betulifolia Autumn Leaves is a hardy deciduous pear grown for its strong form and outstanding seasonal colour. Fresh green foliage creates a dense canopy through spring and summer, then turns rich shades in Autumn for a dramatic finish to the season. In spring it produces clusters of small white flowers, followed by small pear-like fruit that can persist and add interest, as well as providing food for birds.
Perfect for avenue, formal, or contemporary garden styles, Autumn Leaves thrives in full sun and suits a wide range of soils, including heavier ground, as long as drainage is reasonable. It tolerates wind and urban conditions well once established, making it a reliable choice for streets, large gardens, and shelter planting. Space trees 5-7 m apart for specimen planting or an evenly spaced row.
Mature size: Reaches around 8-12 m in height and 5-7 m in width, forming a strong, upright tree with a broadening canopy.
Trimming: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant to shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Light thinning of the canopy can improve airflow and structure without reducing the striking autumn display.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. In poor soils, a second application in mid-summer can encourage vigorous foliage development.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is tolerant of dry conditions but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Ensure well-drained soil to avoid waterlogging.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Monitor for aphids or scale on young shoots and treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Low susceptibility to disease. Ensure good airflow through the canopy and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues. Remove any damaged or diseased leaves to maintain plant health and appearance.
