Prunus persica Cascade

Prunus persica Cascade is a graceful, deciduous flowering peach distinguished by its cascading, weeping branches covered in masses of white flowers interspersed with charming soft pink patches in early to mid-spring. The mixed flower colours create a delicate, painterly effect that stands out beautifully against the emerging fresh green foliage.

Ideal for cottage, courtyard, and formal gardens, Prunus persica Cascade is perfect as a feature tree or for planting near patios and paths where its spring display can be enjoyed up close. It thrives in full sun with fertile, well-draining soil and benefits from protection from strong wind and heavy frost during early flowering. Space approximately 3 to 4 metres apart in garden settings.

Forms a small, pendulous tree reaching around 2.5 to 3 metres high and 2 to 3 metres wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter while the tree is still dormant. Remove any dead, diseased or crossing branches, and thin the canopy to allow light and air into the centre of the tree. Shorten vigorous shoots to maintain a balanced shape and encourage strong flowering and fruiting.

Deadheading: Not applicable, but removing any damaged or withered flowers after flowering can help maintain appearance and reduce disease risk.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring as buds begin to swell. In poor soils, supplement with a liquid feed every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season to support healthy growth and fruit production.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and throughout dry periods, particularly while the tree is flowering and developing fruit. Avoid waterlogging by ensuring soil is free-draining.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, leaf curl aphid, and caterpillars. Use neem oil or insecticidal soap at first signs. Netting may be needed to protect ripening fruit from birds.

Disease Management: Susceptible to peach leaf curl, especially in damp springs. Remove and dispose of affected leaves. Apply a copper-based fungicide during winter dormancy and again at bud swell. Maintain good airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce fungal risk. Clear fallen leaves and debris to prevent disease buildup.
